Nandasunu, your marvelous appearances arrest everyone’s heart, your melodious music on the flute that stirs up various emotions in our hearts, it removes all the sufferings and miseries of the people who are surrendered to you.  Oh! Bhagavan, your melodious music on flute not only grabs the attention of people of Vraja and cows, but it also captures the attention of all the creatures and animals as well, your beautiful appearance with curly hair locks decorated with the feathers of a peacock makes the rivers standstill. Oh! Mukunda, the wind that carries the pollen of flowers and fragrances reluctant to leave your louts' feet, the cows who graze on the fields listen to the melodious music of flute and forgets to take pleasure in the grass, it transports them in a mesmerizing world.  The melodious music from the flute makes the flower buds to blossom and the honey overflowing from it, the honey bees taking pleasure on the Vanamala and Tulsi garlands on your chest forgets to take pleasure in honey, the birds and cuckoos after listening to the music of Venu, stay half-closed their eyes like Yogis and keeps utter silence.  The entire Vraja stands still listening to the melodious music from your Venu.  The fast-moving clouds on the sky standstill on the Vraja and expressing their happiness through beautiful raindrops on the lands.    The beautiful music from Venu transporting everyone to serenity and peace, they are experiencing a wonderful feeling, even the deities, Lord Indra and Lord Bhrama could not find the secret of it.  The female cowherds are drawn to the state of ecstasy, their clothes covered on the chest are slipping down, beautiful braids of hair fallen from the knots, their ornaments decorated all over the bodies are falling down with jingling noises.  They are not aware of any of the outward movements, they have completely forgotten their families, children, and people at home, they have vested their mind and intellect upon the supreme Lord, the herd of female antelope watching the beautiful gathering on the riverbank of Yamuna without blinking their eyes.  The stunning movements of Krishna and the melodious music from his flute transformed the sand bed of river Yamuna into a celestial world, the deities and celestial Gandharvas and Apsaras assembled in the sky and showered flowers upon Krishna and began music and dances in the sky.  The herds' of cows followed Krishna who was playing melodious music on his flute, could not step forward, they completely wrapped up in the music of Venu.  The son of Devaki who returns from the woods, after grazing the cows,  face soaked in perspiration and dust from the hooves of cows, mainly incarnated on the Earth to fulfill the desires the people of Vraja, stirred the passion in the women of cowherds,  Oh! Bhagavan, your beautiful appearance, red lips resemble Bimba fruits, adorned in marvelous ear ornaments that spread intense luster on the cheeks, garlands of flowers and precious ornaments on the chest which is the dwelling place of Lakshmi, Oh! Nandababa, Krishna, Balarama and all the cowherds arrived in Ambikavanam to worship Lord Shiva.  They undertook austerities took bath in the pond and worshiped Lord Pashupati and Ambika in the wood.   The Brahmins who conducted worship were received with great respect and offered charities.  It was on the riverbank of Saraswathi, all the cowherds and Nandababa took rest on the sand bed of the river, suddenly a giant serpent leaped on the body of Nandababa and fastened him.   Nandababa shrieked out calling for Krishna, the cowherds tried all their tricks on the body of the serpent to get to unfasten from the body of Nandababa was failed miserably.  Krishna placed his feet on the body of the serpent, Alas! The serpent has assumed the form of attractive Vidhyadhara, who has the complexion of precious yellow metal with marvelous appearance, prostrated before Krishna and said “Oh! Bhagavan, I was born in the illustrious Vidhyadhara, I am Sudharshana, I was proud of my marvelous appearance, wealth, and fame; I was traveling with the beautiful women on my celestial vehicle, singing and enjoying the splendor of nature.  On my way, I have met Rishi Angirass, and I laughed at his unique appearance, he cursed to become a giant serpent, I felt disappointed and begged for forgiveness.  Rishi Angirass advised me that the touch of your feet would relieve me from the curse.  Oh! Bhagavan, I have realized that the curse has become a great blessing to get the touch of Your lotus feet.  I have got relieved from the curse of twice-born at the touch of your feet, I have thoroughly understood that the touch of your feet would relieve the souls from all their sins and curse.”

Shuka Bhramam continues “ Oh! Rajan, the Vidhyadhara Sudharshana circumambulated Krishna and prostrated before him.  The people of Vraja were awe-struck watching the Vidhyadhara leaving from their sight; they spend that night in the Ambikavanam and on the next day returned to Vraja.  Oh! Rajan, The women of cowherds and the people of Vraja praised Krishna and his various pastimes.  It has become a regular practice that Krishna and Balaram assemble in the woods of Vrindavan during the night and perform passionate sports with the women of cowherds; they sing loudly and dance during the night hours in the creepers of Mallika.  The women of cowherds forgot themselves listening to the melodious music of flute; they did not realize the clothes slipped off from their bodies, disheveled hair, and ornaments.  Once, Krishna was playing melodious music on the flute, the women of cowherds sat around him, they were taking immense pleasure in the melodious music and dancing to the tune.  Suddenly there appeared Shankhachooda born in the clan of Yaksha and abducted the women of cowherds who were dancing around Krishna.  The females shrieked loudly for help, Krishna punished Shakhachooda and removed the precious ornament adorned on his head and gave it to his elder brother.   In this way, the women of cowherds were protected from the abduction of Shankhachooda.”

Shuka Bhramam speaks “ Oh! Rajan, thus Govdina with his presence removed the grief of pain of separation of cowherds.   In the beautiful woods of Vrindavan, Krishna and the female of cowherds began the glorious Rasosthava.  The Supreme Lord Krishna who is Yogeshwara stood in the middle of the circle of women of cowherds, they could see little Krishna between every two Gopis.   The deities and Gandharvas appeared on the sky, celestial Gandharvas performed marvelous music, deities showered flowers on Krishna, and the whole of Vrindavan reverberated with the music, jingling sounds bangles and anklets of cowherds and Krishna.  Maharishi Narada informed all the deities, illustrious Rishis and Sages about the glorious Rasakreeda in the Vrindavan, all the deities appeared to witness it, they felt jealous of the female of cowherds who had the fortune to take pleasure in the merriment with Krishna.  The magnificent Rasamandala filled with Gopis and Krishna who meticulously dancing to the tunes, his beautiful movements of legs and body, two hands resting on the shoulders of Gopis, a beautiful smile on his face, ear ornaments, and the garlands were delightfully moving here and there, Gopis who is adorned in marvelous garments, ornaments on the ear and chest, long and curly hair locks adorned in flowers were attractively moving according to their dances, their faces were soaked in perspiration, they beautifully sang and Krishna danced to the tune of their music, like the rain clouds crammed in the sky produce thunderstorms and lightning.  Thus Devakisutha who is adorned in marvelous yellow garment and upper clothing on the waist, adorned in Vanamala, Srivastham, Kausthubham, flute and various precious ornaments as anklets, waist ornaments, armlets, bangles, necklace, Makarakundalam, beautiful knot of the top of the head adorned with feathers of peacock and pearl ornaments, he has pleasing smile, the forehead is adorned in vermilion and sandalwood paste, eyes decorated with Kajol, and his lips have a resemblance to Bimba fruits.  They embraced each other, took great pleasure in the company of Devakisutha whose mirror image appeared between every two maiden of cowherds did not take notice of their disheveled hair, ornaments and garments were misplaced.  In that full moon night, Lord Chandra instructed the planets to not to move from their orbit, they standstill and took pleasure in watching the glorious Rasakreeda.   In this way all the stars, planets took pleasure in the Rasakreeda of supreme Lord.  The female of cowherds were all tired of dance and music, Krishna advised them to pleasure in the water sport in Yamuna.  They dived in the waters of Yamuna and splashed waters on each others; they were completely wrapped up in water sport like herds of elephants.  Even though Krishna performed various amusements with the female of cowherds, he considered them as his mirror image, he did not find any difference in them and the females of cowherds, in this way the supreme Lord Hrishikesha overpowered the influence of cupid arrows.”

Shuka Bhramam speaks “ Oh ! Rajan, in this way, the female of cowherds who were completely soaked in the thoughts of various pastimes of Krishna, shed tears of the grief of separation from Krishna, and eagerly waited to see him.  Suddenly, Lord Krishna whose appearance excelled the beauty of Manmatha appeared before them, he was attired in majestic yellow silk garment, and his lustrous face has the resemblance of a fully blossomed lotus flower.  The female of cowherds surrounded Krishna, like a pack of honey bees on the flower.  They rushed to Krishna as if they have regained their life once again; they embraced him, massaged his feet, kissed him, one of the females looking at him all angry, some of them looking at him with extreme passion, one of the females looking at Krishna like a Yogi and drank his beauty with her eyes.  They forgot all their grief of separation, the moment they attained the presence of Krishna.  They all moved to the river banks of Kalindi and seated around Krishna, they spread their garments on the sand bed and arranged a beautiful bed for Krishna, one of the females took the head side of Krishna, another one seated on the leg side, keeping Krishna’s leg on her lap, another woman keeping his hands on her lap, and all of them massaging his body parts. The chief of the female cowherds asked “Oh! Bhagavan, Is that inappropriate to express your love to the people who showered love? We have abandoned everything and took shelter in you, why did you abandon us?

Bhagavan speaks “Oh! Dear Ladies, listen to me carefully, there are several ways of expression of love.   Some people express their love with a selfish motive to remain loved, it is not real love and it is a conditional love. There are people who express their love without any condition; it is purely out of compassion like parents, they shower unconditional love for everyone.  There is one of a kind of people who do not express their love to anyone, this kind of people may  find love in themselves or they have experienced all that and contended in their life or selfish natured or adamant to express their love.”

Bhagavan continues “ Oh! Dear Ladies, I do not fall into any of the above categories of the people.  You should not forget to contemplate upon me; your devotion should not be irregular, it should be persistent, I always shower love on you to cultivate the constant remembrance of me.  Whenever you get attracted to the worldly matters, I have to disappear from you until you recall me.  You have remembered me again, like the wealthiest man who lost all the richness, remember his past glories and continues to live.  I have abandoned you to bring back that devotion in you, you have discarded all the worldly matters and bondage, and you have completely surrendered to me, you have searched for me all through the woods, even though my continuous presence as a soul in you.  I have never abandoned you, I was always with you.  You have discarded all the worldly attachments and matters; you have performed a great sacrifice and completely surrendered to me.  I do not think I could do anything to compensate your great sacrifices, even If I take various incarnations I could not compensate that great sacrifices of you all, because you have cut off from the powerful chain of worldly bondage with the sharp sword of your devotion.”

Bhagavan, you were extremely compassionate to us, you have protected us from the toxic waters of Kalindhi, you have protected us from the whirlwind and heavy downpour, like many calamities, took a toll on our lives, but you were always there to protect us, Oh! Bhagavan, you are not an ordinary cowherd of Vraja, you are not the son of Nandababa and Devi Yasodha, we have understood the highest of the philosophies, you are supreme soul resides as a soul in living beings, we are thoroughly aware of the purpose of your birth in the clan of Vrishni to elevate our souls.  Oh! Bhagavan, we have understood the highest of the truth that if we want to recover from all the fears and anxieties of the worldly existence, we have to take shelter at your lotus feet. Oh! Chapter -211 – The legend of Lord Krishna – 62

Anthar Hithe  Bhagavathi Sahasaiva  Vrajangana: | Athapyamsthamachakshana: Karinya Iva Yudhapam ||

Maharas is the heart content of Srimad Bhagavath Mahapuran describes the intense devotion of female cowherds and their complete surrender to Lord Krishna.  The female cowherds of Vraja approached Krishna with a desire to unite with him, they abandoned their families and people, they could immediately cut off all the worldly attachments, but when they took great pleasure in the company of Krishna, they forgot the real nature of the Bhramam.  They took pride in themselves and believed that they have become successful in kindling the emotions in Krishna; suddenly the supreme Lord disappeared from their sight.  Maharas teaches to live life without getting attached to people or wealth while living in material life, spreading happiness and peace, always remain connected with the Supreme Lord who resides as a soul in living beings.   The union of mind and intellect with the supreme Lord, with the practice of meditation and contemplation is ‘Maharas’ which denotes the permanent bliss.

Shuka Bhramam speaks “ Oh! Rajan, the female cowherds who were besieged with the cupid arrows suddenly noticed the absence of Krishna; they could not control their emotions, they have become panicky like the missing of a male elephant from the herd of female elephants.  They became restless, soon they conducted the search for Krishna in the woods, they recollected all the movements of Ramapathi, they remembered the various amusements of Krishna, they began to sing loudly praising the glories of supreme Lord who has all-pervading nature and conducted search all through the woods.  They enquired all those Ashwaththa, Plaksha, Peepal trees, plants, shrubs, creepers in the wood, Ashoka trees, Naga, Punnaga, Chambaka trees about Nandasoonu.  They approached Tulsi, who is Kalyani/auspicious, always yearn for the touch of lotus feet of Govinda, they enquired Malathi, Jathi, about Madhava.  They enquired Yamuna and Mother Earth who was raised by Lord Vishnu as Varaha, about Lord Krishna.  They enquired the herd of deer who fixes their gaze at Krishna, they enquired the huge trees and its widespread branches whether they had the fortune to get the touch of Krishna.  In this way they were completely absorbed in the thoughts of Krishna, eventually assumed they as Krishna, and began to perform the various passionate sports performed by Krishna. One of the lady assumed demon Poothana and the other one as Krishna, one of woman assumed the form of Shakatasura and the other one kicked the demon with her legs, one of the female cowherds who had huge body assumed herself as Mount Govardhana and another woman lifted her assuming herself as Krishna and instructed others to stand under the Mount Govardhana.  They completely forgot their real nature and grief, absorbed in the thoughts of Krishna, and cheered each other.  Eventually, they all got tired of their various sports, soon one of the females shrieked in surprise after witnessing the footprints of Krishna.  They could realize the symbolic mark on the footprint of Krishna, and found the footprints of a young maiden of cowherd too.   They have assumed that Krishna and the female cowherd must have walked together holding their hands on their shoulders like a male elephant disappeared with the female elephant.  The girl who accompanied Krishna to the woods must be a highly fortunate one, must have contemplated upon him tirelessly and taken complete surrender upon him, she is highly fortunate to have the association of supreme Lord who is difficult to attain even for Lord Bhrama and deities.  The female of cowherds who was eagerly watching the footprints on the ground that created little hollow on the ground confirmed that he must have carried that girl who accompanied him to woods.  While moving forward they could not witness the footprints of Krishna, they witnessed rock and bed of flowers on it.  The cowherds assumed that the girl who accompanied Krishna must have desired to get the flowers.  Krishna must have plucked flowers, made garlands and adorned on her head.  The cowherds conducted a search for the footprints, but found Krishna’s footprints were missing; only the footprint of the girl could be seen.  It was true that Krishna was followed by a young maiden of cowherds to the dense wood, while they moved a long way; she revealed her inability to move further and asked him to carry her.  Bhagavan bends on his knees before her and asked to take a seat on his shoulder, while she was trying to climb up on his shoulder with the slightest pride, soon he disappeared from her sight, and she fell down on the ground with a thud.  She was crying loudly calling out for Krishna,” Oh! Natha, Oh! Ramana, do not abandon me in the woods, I have discarded all the worldly attachments and began the journey with you, kindly bless me with your presence.”  All the female cowherds felt relieved to watch the young beautiful maiden who was in extreme grief and pain of separation from Krishna.  They continued to search for Krishna all over the woods, finally returned to the river banks of Yamuna, they shed tears remembering Krishna and his various pastimes.”

Chapter – 210 – The legend of Lord Krishna – 61

Shukha Bhramam speaks “ Oh! Rajan, the women of cowherds were stunned to hear from Krishna.  They stood like a stone pillar after listening to the speeches of Krishna.  Their faces filled in utter disappointment, besieged with the cupid arrows and pain of separation from him. They shed tears of extreme agony, the vermilion adorned in their body melted in the tears.  They could not even think of separation from him, tears overflowing stared at Krishna, it choked their voice and began to speak “ Oh! Adhipurusha, do not hurt with your unkind words. Oh! Bhagavan, we have surrendered at your lotus feet, we have no other shelter place, we have abandoned all the worldly matters and took shelter in you and you are asking us to return homes, how could you abandon a Mumukshu?  Oh! Bhagavan, you have given a speech about the righteousness of a married woman, to take care of husband and relatives, we are not against it.  How could you refuse us?  We have already surrendered our mind and intellect to you, therefore this wife should unite with her husband who is supreme Lord.  Oh! Aravindhanethra, we are constantly remembering your lovely appearance in our heart, how could we take pleasure the material life and the family? We want permanent bliss, unlike the one we are getting from the association of family and relatives. Oh! Parameshwara who resides as a soul in living beings, kindly do not separate us from you.  Oh! Bhagavan, when we listened to your melodious music on the flute, we could not move our body because it is already fixed at your lotus feet, our intellect was completely absorbed in the music played.  How could you leave us? Therefore we cannot go back to our homes.  Oh! Bhagavan, kindly relieve our passion-filled hearts with your nectar-like saliva, Oh! Ambujaksha, Goddess Sri residing in your heart taking pleasure in the service of your lotus feet, we have no one other than you.  Oh! Bhagavan, we are eagerly waiting to adorn the dust from your feet. We have rushed to see you after listening to your melodious music, your beautiful appearance, adorned in Makara Kundala, and smile resembles the shine of lotus flower, your hand that gives shelter to your devotees, who could leave you? Kindly do not ask us to leave.  Oh! Bhagavan, we cannot take our mind and hearts from your marvelous form, how could we separate it from you?  It is impossible for us to leave you.  We have already surrendered our hearts and mind to you, kindly bless these Dasi/attendants, with your lotus hands keeping on our bosom and head.”

Shukha Bhramam speaks “ Oh! Rajan, after listening to the compassionate words of female of cowherds, Krishna who is Yogeshwareshwara smiled at them, decided to make them happy.  They all accompanied Lord Krishna on the river banks of Yamuna, they immersed in the embrace and taking great pleasure in the company of Krishna.  In this way, Krishna stirred up the emotions in the female of cowherds, in a moment they also felt that Krishna is besieged with the cupid arrows.  They took pride in themselves, witnessing the most passionate sport of Krishna with them.  In a sudden moment, Lord Krishna disappeared from their sight to bless them, to elevate their souls from the amorous sport and remove their pride.”
